The police chief in Ocala, Fla., died Sunday when the plane he was flying crashed into a field.

Greg Graham’s single-engine private plane went down in Dunnellon, just outside the Marion County Airport, around 11:30 a.m. Sunday, according to the Ocala Star-Banner.

Graham was the only person on board and nobody on the ground was injured.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating the cause of the crash.

Deputy Chief Mike Balken has been named the interim chief.

“Chief Graham was a mentor to many and inspirational to all,” the Ocala Police Department said in a statement.

“We have had the great privilege to have called him a friend, a boss, and a part of our family for well over thirty years. He was the heart of the Department. His heart beat for Ocala, for his community, for his department, and especially for his family. We will miss his passion for community and law enforcement; his candor and personality; his strong leadership; and most definitely his smile.”
