A former University of Texas-Arlington golf director sexually harassed and made unwelcome sexual comments to female athletes, according to an investigation by the school.

A UTA investigation determined that Stuart Deane, who became UTA’s golf coach in 2015, violated the university’s alcohol policies and engaged in unprofessional conduct. He also violated Title IX policies by sexually harassing students, a press release from the university said.

The investigation started when UTA received an anonymous complaint about Deane in August 2018. After a brief initial review, Deane was put on administrative leave and separated from the team.

Deane resigned in October while the investigation was ongoing. He could not immediately be reached for comment Monday afternoon.

UTA’s campus newspaper, the Shorthorn, first reported UTA’s investigation into Deane on Friday based on a copy of the report the paper obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request.

According to the Shorthorn, Deane’s comments to one athlete caused her to transfer schools.

The investigation determined that Deane had “created a hostile environment for female players in that there is ‘a situation of discriminatory or sexual nature,’” according to the Shorthorn.

“The University of Texas at Arlington is committed to the safety, security and wellbeing of all UTA students,” UTA President Vistasp Karbhari said in a statement. “When presented these serious allegations, the university immediately initiated an investigation and took measures to protect our students.”

The school offered counseling and resources to students involved in the sexual harassment allegations, the release said.

Deane has played in several prominent golf tournaments, including in May when he played in the PGA Championship for the third time.
