Police in Dallas have arrested Thomas in the brutal beating of a transgender woman in an attack that was caught on cellphone video. A 29-year-old man was in custody Monday, accused in the attack on a transgender woman Friday afternoon at a Dallas intersection.

Edward Thomas was booked into the Dallas County Jail on Sunday night and faces a charge of aggravated assault with serious bodily injury.

A video posted on Facebook showed several people punched and kicked the victim, who suffered serious injuries in the assault. Witnesses took the woman to a local hospital after the attack.

Dallas police are investigating it as a possible hate crime. There could be more arrests.

Dallas police said the assault occurred shortly after 5 p.m. Friday near the Royal Crest Apartments at 3558 Wilhurt Ave. The woman had been in a minor traffic accident at the apartments when multiple people attacked her and called her homophobic slurs, police said.

The assault was captured on video and posted on Facebook.

The video shows a group of people standing around an intersection at an apartment complex. A man in a white shirt starts to hit the woman in the face and she falls to the ground. Others around her start to kick her. After about a minute, a group of women help the woman up and carry her away.

Dallas police responded and interviewed the injured woman at a hospital shortly before 11:30 p.m. Friday.

The victim identified herself through a family member to Star-Telegram media partner WFAA as Muhlaysia Booker. The family member said Booker suffered facial fractures and that her right arm is in a sling. He told WFAA that Booker has been released from the hospital and is “thanking God that she’s still alive.”

Mayor Mike Rawlings condemned the assault in a statement Saturday morning.

“I am extremely angry about what appears to be mob violence against this woman,” he said in the statement. “Those who did this do not represent how Dallasites feel about our thriving LGBTQ community. We will not stand for this kind of behavior.”

The woman told Dallas police the attackers used homophobic slurs during the assault.

Thomas was being held in the Dallas County Jail without bond.
