In “Secret City,” writer James Kirchick chronicles the history of Washington’s rich gay subculture. He introduces readers to scores of characters that faced ruthless persecution because of their sexuality… persecution that was in part fueled by some of the same conspiracy theories conservative lawmakers recycle today. MSNBC’s Michael Steele talks with Kirchick about the new book and gay Americans long fight for equality.
