Three dead following Amtrak train derailment in Montana
Three people are dead following an Amtrak train derailment in Montana, the company confirmed Saturday night.
At approximately 4 p.m. local time, Empire Builder train 7/27, which was traveling westbound from Chicago, derailed near Joplin, Montana, according to a statement from Amtrak. Three people among the roughly 141 passengers and 16 crew members were killed as a result of eight of the locomotive's 10 cars derailing, and an unspecified number of people were injured.

"We are deeply saddened to learn local authorities are now confirming that three people have lost their lives as a result of this accident ... Amtrak is working with the local authorities to transport those who were injured to medical care, and to safely evacuate everyone else at the scene," the company said.
Montana Gov. Greg Gianforte confirmed authorities were "closely monitoring the situation."
"Please join me in praying for all involved and the first responders on the ground," he added.

Amtrak will cancel Empire Builder trains 7/27 and 8/28 between Minot, North Dakota, and Shelby, Montana, originating on Saturday due to the derailment, and service for two additional Empire Builder trains will be disrupted, the company said, noting it will provide additional details as they become available.
