Served in the Black Hawk War 1832, elected  to Illinois State legislature 1836, served in Mexican War 1846-47, Illinois member, US Senate 1849-55, Minnesota member, US House of Representatives 1858-61. 1879: First senator to have represented three states

James Shields, an American Democrat politician and United States Army office, begins a term as a US Senator from Missouri, thus becoming the only person in US history to have represented three states, Illinois (1849), Minnesota (1858) earlier.
