Just like that, the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar has come to a close.

A total of 64 games were played in the space of less than a month with Argentina defeating France in a thrilling final on December 18 to lift the title.

Lionel Messi's side began the tournament with a shock defeat to Saudi Arabia but bounced back in style to claim the iconic trophy for a third time.

Their final match against France was one for the ages as Argentina took a two-goal lead into halftime courtesy of Messi and Angel Di Maria.

Kylian Mbappe then dragged Les Bleus back into the contest with two goals in two minutes in the 80th minute.

Messi then restored Argentina's lead in extra time before Mbappe struck again from the spot to pull France level.

Didier Deschamps' side then had a golden chance to win the match at the death but Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez produced a stunning save.

Martinez's heroics would extend into the penalty shootout as he made one save and France missed another as the South Americans claimed a 4-2 win on spotkicks.
