After holding center fielder Mike Trout out for several days with a wrist injury, the Los Angeles Angels have now placed the All-Star outfielder on the 10-day disabled list due to inflammation in his wrist.

While X-rays cleared his right wrist of any major damage, Trout was held out of the lineup throughout the week. The 27-year-old last played on Aug. 1 when he suffered the injury after sliding into third base.

Los Angeles was able to backdate the DL stint to Aug. 7, which would allow the team to bring him back sooner. However, the team could exercise extreme caution given they are out of the postseason chase and need to protect the game’s best player.

In 109 games this season, Trout has posted a .309/.459/.624 slash line with 30 home runs and 99 walks.

He was among the favorite to win the A.L.’s MVP award, though this could be a setback given the strength of the field with Mookie Betts and Jose Ramirez.
