It's almost unheard of that something as seemingly routine as a joint sprain could threaten a man's life, but that's where Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Kevin Pillar found himself Saturday when he hurt himself diving for a ball against the Red Sox.

Pillar, who has been making incredible web-gem grabs lately, laid it all on the line and came up with the out despite the team ultimately losing 6-2 in extras. He was immediately pulled and eventually placed on the 10-day DL with a shoulder injury.

What appeared to be a more typical strain actually wound up diagnosed as a sternoclavicular joint sprain. According to Sportsnet's Arden Zwelling, could have been fatal.

Here's Zwelling's further breakdown of the injury.

Absolutely insane and quite scary. Credit to both the Red Sox and Jays medical staff for working together, assessing the situation, and treating Pillar properly.

The 29-year-old has been terrific on defense this season and currently hitting .247/.279/.407 with eight homers and 37 RBI in 93 games. He luckily appears to be okay now, and after proper rehabilitation, will make his return to the field.
