a man holding a baseball bat © Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports New York Yankees trainer Steve Donahue is accustomed to dealing with unexpected situations that can occur during a baseball game. But the scene that played out during Wednesday’s game against the Chicago White Sox? That was beyond the pale.

Well, it’s bound to be a “crazy” scene when the words “moth” “ear” and “extract” are used in the same sentence, as Donahue himself admitted.

Umpire Bruce Dreckman had to take a brief break from his duties Wednesday night at Guaranteed Rate Field after a moth somehow burrowed its way into his ear during the ninth inning.

Donahue provided some assistance in the Yankees’ dugout but it was Dreckman who finally managed to remove the insect from his ear canal. The Yankees trainer detailed how things played out ahead of Thursday’s game against the Texas Rangers at Yankee Stadium.

“Well, the umpire, at first I didn’t see him. And then someone said, Hey, the umpire is coming this way, you better go try and help him out and I didn’t know what was wrong with him,” Donohue relayed during an interview with YES Network, as transcribed by The Star-Ledger. “And he says, ‘A bug just flew into my ear!’

“Naturally, I’m expecting a small gnat or a mosquito or something. So I tried with a cotton-tip applicator and nothing is coming out and he’s like, you got tweezers? I’m like, All right, let’s get them.

“I got them out of the kit and I started in there a little bit and I was like, ‘Look, you might want to try this yourself because I don’t want to dig too deep. He tried it, he started feeling something, I helped him get it out. I don’t know if he was ‘Bats in the Bellfrey,’ but that was a big moth, I’m going to tell you. This thing was flying.”

Donahue admitted the entire incident was “crazy” and “nuts.” Shocking.

“Though, some of these umpires, I don’t know what’s going on inside their heads anyway,” Donahue quipped.
