Excitement at the sight of a grizzly bear charging into a river quickly turned to concern last Friday as the bear was in clear pursuit of a passing kayaker.

The accompanying footage, shared to Facebook on Monday by the Squamish Rafting Company, was captured on the Elaho River near Squamish in British Columbia, Canada.

The kayaker is well ahead of a group of rafters from Wedge Whitewater Rafting. Its leader slows the group and yells in wonderment, "Oh, grizzly bear! Baby grizzly bear!"

The leader almost immediately realizes the bear is in attack mode and orders its group to back paddle, to slow its progress toward the bear.

"Oh my god it's following him," one of the rafters says, in reference to the kayaker.

The kayaker, as soon as he realizes what's happening, forward paddles furiously to try to escape the bear, which ultimately veers to his right, ending the threat.

Sgt. Simon Gravel with the British Columbia Conservation Officer Service told the Global News that while its rare for a grizzly bear to swim after a kayaker on a river, the animals are known to "bluff charge" intruders as a defensive behavior.

"They're just trying to communicate that you're not welcome in the area," Gravel said.
