Stephen Curry: Timberwolves passed on him in draft over his love of golf

The Minnesota Timberwolves had the opportunity to select Stephen Curry with one of two picks toward to the top of the first round of the 2009 NBA Draft. Instead, the T-Wolves opted to select Ricky Rubio with the No. 5 and then Johnny Flynn at No. 6.

In hindsight — and arguably at the time — the decision to pass on Curry represents a huge swing-and-miss of epic proportions. Urban legend has it that then-Timberwolves president of basketball operations David Kahn was hesitant to pick Curry … because of the point guard’s love of golf.

At least that’s how Curry heard it, and he recently relayed as much during an appearance on The Bill Simmons Podcast on The Ringer (via Dime Mag).

Simmons: “When you go to Minnesota, do you have a little something extra for them? Or do you not have any bitterness anymore?”

Curry: “My guy David Kahn. I don’t know where he’s at right now. I don’t know if that ever came out. There’s a story… Everyone knows how much I love golf and play it in my spare time or whatnot. I think the word on the street was that he didn’t draft me because Minnesota is cold and I wouldn’t be able to play as much golf so I’d be miserable.

Simmons: “Is that true?”

Curry: “I hope it’s true because that’s hilarious.”

Hilarious, indeed. Well, except for Timberwolves fans.

Rubio of course turned out to be a solid NBA point guard during his tenure in Minnesota before getting traded to the Utah Jazz ahead of last season. Flynn, on the other hand, never really did anything at all in the NBA, only lasting a few seasons with the Timberwolves.

Hindsight obviously is 20-20, of course. Still, passing on Curry over his passion for golf? That’s beyond the pale.

Kahn was known to make interesting choices during his time with the Timberwolves organization, though, including the decision to have this absurd exchange with Chris Webber back in 2010.

With that in mind, yeah, it makes complete sense Kahn passed on Curry. Over golf.
