Now that Texas is officially back, Tom Herman wants to keep the Longhorns in the Big 12 Title picture.

Almost all position coaches and assistant coaches on Herman's Texas staff are on one-year contracts. The reason? He doesn't want anyone getting comfortable.

Certainly a cool motivation tactic, but Herman is keeping his most trusted assistants well compensated. Recruiting wizard and offensive line coach Herb Hand is still getting comfortably compensated on a long-term contract. In addition, quarterbacks coach/offensive coordinator Tim Beck and defensive coordinator Todd Orlando are still among the highest-paid assistant coaches in the NCAA.

A couple of those coaches coming in on short-term deals include former Kansas head coach David Beatty and former North Carolina head coach Larry Fedora.

After years upon years of Camping World Bowl appearances and disappointing 8-5 seasons, Herman and his staff finally struck gold with his Sugar Bowl-winning campaign last year. He needs his assistants to bring their A-game if he wants to both maintain that level of excellence and potentially unseat Oklahoma.
