What you need to know about Michigan State

Michigan State was not expected to be a contender in the Big Ten this season, but it has moved all the way to No. 11 nationally in the latest poll. The Spartans have already gone on the road and picked up wins over Northwestern and Miami, so they will not be worried about traveling for this game. Their offense clicked on all cylinders against Western Kentucky last week, averaging 7.1 yards per play in a 48-31 win.

Running back Kenneth Walker III had 24 carries for 126 yards and three touchdowns in the victory over the Hilltoppers. He leads the nation with 680 rushing yards on 100 attempts and is tied for sixth with eight rushing touchdowns. Rutgers is coming off a 39-point loss to Ohio State, so the Scarlet Knights do not have any momentum entering this game.

What you need to know about Rutgers

Rutgers started off the season at 3-0 but the talent disparity was still clear in back-to-back losses to Michigan and Ohio State. The Buckeyes piled up 541 yards of total offense in a 52-13 win last week but the Rutgers defense had generally been solid prior to running into a powerhouse who needs style points to work their way back into the title conversation.

The Scarlet Knights hadn't given up more than 275 yards of total offense in their four prior game and Greg Schiano's defense will be hoping for a more fundamentally sound outing on Saturday. Linebacker Olakunle Fatukasi leads the team in total tackles (47) and tackles for loss (6.5) this season and he'll need to be a cog in the middle of that defense to slow Michigan State down.

How to make Michigan State vs. Rutgers picks

The model is leaning under on the total and it's also generated a point-spread pick that is hitting in well over 50 percent of simulations. You can only see the pick at SportsLine.
