Why the Fenway Bowl could be the most heated game of the 2022 bowl season

It's college football bowl season, which means that it's also college football coaching carousel season.

The Cincinnati Bearcats know that truth intimately right now, as they find themselves right in the thick of the insanity. The Bearcats lost their head coach of six seasons, Luke Fickell, to the Wisconsin Badgers. He was the best coach in program history.

With a huge vacancy to fill and a jump to the Big 12 imminent, the Bearcats had to make a big, bold move — and they did that by hiring Scott Satterfield from Louisville.

Louisville and Cincinnati are now set to meet in the Wasabi Fenway Bowl, a bowl game pairing that could end up being the most intriguing matchup outside of the two College Football Playoff semifinal games and perhaps the Rose Bowl.

The storyline of Satterfield ditching Louisville for Cincinnati will be first and foremost on everyone's minds watching the game. Satterfield will, of course, not yet be coaching for the Bearcats, but it's essentially now his program. He also won't be coaching the Cardinals. The interim role will go to Louisville player development director Deion Branch. Yes, that Deion Branch.

Louisville is effectively still Satterfield's team. It's the team he coached up to a 7-5 record this season and the program he went 25-24 with since 2019.

It's going to be riveting to see how Louisville responds to this matchup now that the Cardinals know Satterfield is going to be representing the other side. That's not even to mention the rivalry between the two schools.

The two schools are separated by just 104 miles and their rivalry boasts perhaps one of the best trophies in sports: The Keg of Nails.

Throw in the fact that this matchup will be played at Boston's historic Fenway Park and you've got yourself all the makings of a must-watch.
