Don’t count Colt McCoy out of the running for starting QB

So far in the past 12 months, the Washington Redskins have seen a total of six quarterbacks take snaps under center, be it in game action or at practice.

After an array of injuries plagued the 2018 season, Bruce Allen decided to trade for one QB while drafting another, hoping to drum up a competition between the two. However, there may be one more QB in the locker room who wants to slow the notion that he's no longer in the running to start.

Colt McCoy has his hat in the ring, still.

He hasn't played a snap since going down with a broken leg in December of 2018, but his recovery is nearing completion, and once he gets back to taking meaningful reps, some around the team expect him to put some added pressure on both Keenum and Haskins.

"We would love for him to take some reps, but obviously his health is more important right now than anything, and that is the most important thing for him," Redskins coach Jay Gruden said, via NBC Sports. "When his time comes it will come quickly. He will be ready."

McCoy had some name recognition after coming out of the University of Texas, but it's easy to forget about his career in the NFL. Through eight years, the 32-year-old has started just 27 games, with a career 60% completion rate. in 2018, McCoy played in three games for Washington, throwing for three touchdowns and three interceptions.

He may not have the skillset of Haskins or the veteran experience of Keenum, but at the very least McCoy will be able to add a few extra years of experience to the QB Room, as well as pushing the competition level up a few notches for that starting spot.

As the future of the Redskins, Haskins will eventually have the position to himself, even if it is not realized to start the season. If Keenum gets the nod, it will be his spot until he is no longer deserving. If McCoy is crowned the winner, fans and media members alike will be scratching their heads, questioning how it happened.

It may seem like a long shot, but don't think of it as impossible - the Redskins don't.
