It's been a long battle for Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly, who is battling cancer for the third time.

Today, he revealed that he will be traveling to New York City next month for an unexpected "checkup" after "something came up" in his recovery from oral cancer surgery that reconstructed his upper jaw.

"I'm not sure what's going on," Kelly said of what prompted his upcoming visit. "I have some things that I want to have looked at, and then we'll go from there. I don't know whether I'm going to be here for two days, four days or in and out. And then hopefully I pray when September has rolled around that I can finally bite into a piece of meat and not soup every day."

Kelly will be receiving the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance this Wednesday in Los Angeles, and then will travel during the second week of August to New York City to meet with doctors.

Kelly, who had surgery in 2013 to remove squamous cell carcinoma of the upper jaw and underwent chemotherapy treatment in 2014 when cancer was found in his maxillary sinus, was declared cancer free in September of 2014, but now faces another uphill climb.

Faith, friends, family and fans are what Kelly plans to discuss during his award speech, hoping to inspire people to never give up in their fight.

Good luck, Jim Kelly, we're all rooting for you.
