The Washington Redskins made a big statement in signing NFL veteran running back Adrian Peterson. The team showed that having a player of Peterson's pedigree could work wonders on the field and also help the many young backs the team has on the roster.

Peterson will be expected to battle for and ultimately win the starting job or his signing more than likely would not have happened.

He brings a toughness and skill set to the Redskins that the team had been banking on rookie Darrius Guice to supply this year before his season-ending ACL tear in the team's preseason opener.

Peterson, despite being 33-years of age, has proven to be an ultra-competitive player who keeps himself in great shape. If he's at his best he gives the Redskins a homerun threat to pair with Chris Thompson, Robert Kelley, Samaje Perine and perhaps Kapri Bibbs.

Washington traded for quarterback Alex Smith in the offseason and acquired WR Paul Richardson via free agency with the mindsight of winning now.

The move to sing Peterson plays into that 'mindset' with a greater value on hand as well.

The future Hall of Fame running back can also be the perfect example setter for Guice and show him how to work hard during his comeback from an injury he sustained as well. After his ACL injury in 2014, Peterson followed up the next season by rushing for 1,485 yards and 11 touchdowns.

How he will be used in coach Jay Gruden's offense remains to be seen, but all bets are on the former Oklahoma star to be a top threat in DC.
