Kirk Cousins’ record in games against good teams is . . . well, it’s bad

a football player holding a baseball bat: Getty © File photo Getty Kirk Cousins is blah. He's boring. He's vanilla. He's just good enough to beat the bad teams but not good enough to win big games against good teams. It at least feels that way. Well, actually we know it's that way. We have the stats to back it up. I picked the Seahawks because of the information below:

Kirk Cousins is getting paid an average of $28 million in his three-year contract. I hate saying a player isn't worth his contract because by definition they are worth whatever someone will pay them. Minnesota fans aren't paying Cousins' contract. Why should they care what he's getting paid?

Well, he's not worth that contract. He's not worth that contract because the Vikings have regressed in a year where the team expected to be a Super Bowl contender. He's not worth that money because it's fully guaranteed. There are no outs. He's not worth that contract because of his records listed above. That isn't mediocre. That's bad. It's very bad.

The scale is as follows: Kirk Cousins > Alex Smith > Case Keenum. But, they are all pretty much the same. There's no much of a separation on each step up. Keenum is serviceable, but probably a backup. Smith is a game manager on the wrong side of 35 - who now may have suffered a career ending injury - but he's not as expensive as Cousins. Cousins is slightly better than Smith, who is better than Keenum. Come to think of it, has anyone actually seen these three quarterbacks in the same place? Are we sure it isn't one person wearing a wig and adding some fake facial hair?

This is who Kirk Cousins is. He's Andy Dalton with an Aaron Rodgers' contract - yes I know Rodgers gets paid more, it's for effect - and there aren't a ton of quarterbacks who will sign contracts that pay them more than Cousins during the duration of his contract.

That's bad news for Minnesota.
