Rams make Brandin Cooks 4th-highest paid WR, tied with Sammy Watkins

The Los Angeles Rams announced they've signed Brandin Cooks to a five-year extension on Tuesday, keeping him around through 2023. The deal tacks on to his current contract, which was set to end at the end of the season.

The team didn't release the terms of the deal, but as he often does, Adam Schefter released them on Twitter. The contract is reportedly worth $80 million over the five years - or $16 million per year - which makes him the fourth-highest paid receiver in the NFL.

Coincidentally, he's making the same amount annually as the guy he's replacing, Sammy Watkins. So much for the Rams not being able to afford what Watkins was looking for, huh?

Obviously, $80 million - $88.5 million, if you include this season - is a hefty amount to pay a wide receiver, especially for a team that needs to pay Jared Goff, Todd Gurley, Aaron Donald, Marcus Peters and Lamarcus Joyner in the near future. However, after giving up a first-round pick, this was a deal sure to get done before the season.

The Rams couldn't afford to let him walk in free agency like Watkins, coming away with just a third-round compensatory pick in return. By no means is Cooks the fourth-best wide receiver in the NFL, but tying him to Jared Goff for several years is something the Rams feel good about.
