A suspected MCL tear for Washington Redskins running back Derrius Guice is a torn ACL after an MRI, according to various reports.

Guice, a second-round rookie, suffered the injury during Week 1 of the preseason against the New England Patriots.

Early Friday, the initial thought was Guice had suffered a sprain. Instead, Guice and everyone else was surprised by the development:

Context from Guice's collegiate career also came to light:

The Redskins issued a statement:

It's a major blow for the Redskins going into a critical season for Jay Gruden's offense directed by new quarterback Alex Smith.

While the Redskins have quality depth at running back thanks to the likes of Kapri Bibbs, Samaje Perine and Rob Kelley, the idea was to pair a first-round talent like Guice with Chris Thompson right away.

Instead, Guice's NFL career starts with a medical redshirt.
