The long wait for Colt’s backup QB is over

The Redskins lost starting QB Alex Smith for the season yesterday after he broke the tibia and fibula in his right leg. He had surgery, and the injury is not considered career-ending. Colt McCoy stepped in yesterday, and was almost able to lead the Redskins to a comeback win over the Houston Texans. Washington only carried two QBs this year, and the emergency QB would have been either Trey Quinn or Jordan Reed.

The search for a backup QB started immediately, and the Redskins contacted 5 QBs to work out today. Mark Sanchez, T.J. Yates, Kellen Clemens, EJ Manuel, and Josh Johnson were all at Redskins Park this morning for a chance to get signed. Mark Sanchez has emerged as the winner and will be signed today. Sanchez will have three days to prepare for his former team, the Dallas Cowboys, and to get familiar with the Redskins playbook.

Sanchez is a former 5th overall pick from the 2009 draft taken by the New York Jets. He spent five years with the Jets before starting his career as a backup in the NFL. Sanchez has also played for the Philadelphia Eagles and the Dallas Cowboys.
