Tony Romo: Ezekiel Elliott a ‘coin flip’ to rejoin Cowboys pre-Week 1

Tony Romo is a busy man. He's pulled in many different directions in his role with CBS, but no matter how far removed he is from his days playing quarterback for the Cowboys, his intel and insight into the club make his interviews coveted material. The Cowboys' all-time leading passer made an appearance on CBS Sports HQ, where the company man opened up with his thoughts on the Cowboys' current contract negotiations.

While speaking with a smile, Romo specifically mentioned Ezekiel Elliott, Amari Cooper and Dak Prescott, and that it's just a matter of time before each of the three players gets their new contract.

Referencing previous deals, including the recent re-signing of DeMarcus Lawrence, Romo pointed out that the need to sign players to newer, larger contracts finds its genesis in good drafting, "They're really showing people that they've drafted well." And that while it can take up time and attention, "It's a good problem to have." When asked to dive in on Prescott's contract specifically, Romo didn't hold back:

"In the NFL quarterbacks, running backs, wide receivers, it doesn't matter. It's about the production. Are you winning? Are you helping your football team win? Are you producing? And Dak's done that since the moment he stepped onto the field."

Three years ago last week Kellen Moore broke his ankle, allowing a rookie fourth-rounder to be elevated to Romo's primary backup. At the onset of that training camp, Prescott was in a battle for the No. 3 spot on the QB depth chart with Jameill Showers. One week after the Moore injury, Prescott picked apart the Rams in his first preseason start and cemented the foundation of his ascent. Two weeks after the Moore injury, Romo broke a bone in his back in Seattle, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Fast forward three years and Romo is working for CBS, commenting on Prescott's pending contract extension, while Moore is calling the plays as the Cowboys' offensive coordinator, and Showers is a practice squad free safety. The world is funny place.

While Romo provided plenty of sound on Prescott, he did also offer one very interesting insight on Elliott. Asked if he expected Ezekiel Elliott back for Week 1 Romo said,

"Yeah, I don't know about that. I think that's a coin flip, but I do think he'll back at some point. But Week 1? He'll be close."

A guy as tuned in as Romo is drawing off of his own personal experience in negotiating, and specifically with the Cowboys' front office. many felt Elliott would likely back once the real games start, Romo has his doubts on that. A coin flip, 50-50, no bueno.

The Cowboys start their season with the Giants, Redskins and Dolphins, games they'll likely be favored to win even without Elliott.
