Brazil made it two gold medals in a row, beating pre-tournament favorite Spain in the 2021 men's Olympic soccer final. An extra-time goal by Malcom proved the difference in the 2-1 triumph.

It's the third time that Spain has finished with a silver medal, and its 1992 triumph at the Barcelona Olympic Games remains its only gold.

The bronze went to Mexico, which beat host Japan in convincing fashion, 3-1. It's the nation's second-ever Olympic soccer medal after the gold-medal run in 2012.

Knockout matches, including the medal round matches, that ended in a tie after 90 minutes of regulation went to 30 minutes of extra time (two 15-minute periods). If the deadlock persisted in the extra period, the winner was determined by a penalty-kick shootout. A total of five of the eight men's knockout matches needed extra time, with two going to a penalty-kick shootout.
