Ross Barkley's legal representatives have confirmed that the Everton midfielder was indeed the victim of an 'unprovoked attack'.

The England international, who helped the Toffees to a 4-2 victory over Premier League champions Leicester City on Sunday, was at a nightclub on Sunday night, where footage showed him getting sucker punched by a male individual for no apparent reason.

Barkley immediately slumped to the ground after receiving the blow, and his attacker had to be pulled away from the scene.

The video has since gone viral, but Barkley's identity wasn't confirmed until his lawyers made it known via the BBC.

They said: "We can confirm Ross was the victim of an unprovoked attack by a stranger who approached him on Sunday evening."

Everton have not commented on the incident, but are said to still be reviewing the footage.

We can assure you, however, that the assailant isn't Liverpool's Dejan Lovren, although he probably wishes he could have done so himself following Barkley's horror tackle during the Merseyside derby on April 1.
