The USMNT are not going to the World Cup after a dreadful loss to Trinidad and Tobago on the final day of qualifying. But the U.S. is still playing matches, and those matches are televised.

Fox Sports 1's pregame coverage of the Portugal-USMNT friendly Tuesday struck a bit too close to home. Former U.S. head coach Bruce Arena was an in-studio analyst for the match. His appearance was promoted in the week leading up to the broadcast, and at the time, it seemed like a tone-deaf move to put the engineer of the USMNT's biggest embarrassment in front of a camera as some sort of expert.

Those concerns were realized on Tuesday.

Arena answered questions about what went wrong and the USMNT's plan going forward, but his presence on the broadcast didn't sit well with the still-upset USMNT fans. Arena's appearance was the epitome of "too soon."
