The semifinals round of the 2022 French Open is officially set after some exciting matches in the quarterfinals. A marquee matchup on Tuesday saw Rafael Nadal take down No. 1 Novak Djokovic 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, 7-6. That was their 59th all-time meeting and the 10th at Roland Garros.

Nadal, a 13-time French Open champion, was able to make his Serbian opponent pay for defeating him in last year's semifinals. The Spanish star arrived to Paris with injury concerns, but Nadal still managed to win his first three rounds in straight sets. Carlos Alcaraz had been doing well in Paris until Alexander Zverev stopped his momentum on Tuesday. The German player defeated the 19-year-old Spanish star 6-4, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 on Tuesday. Zverev will take on Nadal on Friday's semifinal round.

On the women's side, world No.1 Iga Swiatek entered the competition with a 28-match winning streak and was ranked the No. 1 seed. Since then, Swiatek has extended her winning streak to 32 and beat Jessica Pegula 6-3, 6-2 on Wednesday.

Swiatek's path to a second French Open title got a little clearer after some big names fell in the first round, including defending champion Barbora Krejcikova, Anett Kontaveit, Ons Jabeur and Garbine Muguruza. Naomi Osaka, who made her return to Roland Garros after withdrawing from the 2021 event to focus on her mental health, also lost in the opening round.

Serena Williams is not competing in the French Open for first time since 2017. The 23-time Grand Slam winner has not played since last June, when she suffered an ankle injury at Wimbledon.
