It is the only surviving work of John Montague Trimble, one of America's foremost 19th-century theater architects, and originally housed the town government, library, and 1,000-seat auditorium. A 1909 renovation led to the removal of side balconies and the installation of an ornate proscenium arch and electric stage lights.
