Jeopardy host Alex Trebek, who announced on social media March 6 that he has been diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer, went back online Thursday to simply give thanks to fans for their support.

“Even Watson, the IBM computer, sent me a get-well card,” Trebek, 78, said in a brief video message. “Now obviously I won’t be able to respond to all of you individually, but I did want you to know that I do read everything I receive, and I am thankful for the kind words, the prayers, and the advice you have offered. And I am extremely touched by the warmth you have expressed in your comments to me.”

He ended by saying, “I’m a lucky guy.”

Last week, Trebek shared a video announcement about this diagnosis. “It’s in keeping with my policy of being open and transparent with our Jeopardy fan base,” he said. “I also wanted to prevent you from reading or hearing some overblown or inaccurate reports regarding my health. So therefore, I wanted to be the one to pass along this information.”

He went on to say that “Just like 50,000 other people in the United States each year, this week I was diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer. Now, normally the prognosis for this is not very encouraging, but I’m gonna fight this. I’m gonna keep working. And with the love and support of my family and friends, and with the help of your prayers also, I plan to beat the low survival-rate statistics for this disease. Truth be told, I have to. Under the terms of my contract, I have to host Jeopardy for three more years. So help me! Keep the faith, and we’ll win! We’ll get it done. Thank you.”

Trebek has hosted Jeopardy since 1984.
