People's Choice Awards 2016 People's Choice Awards: The winners The People's Choice Awards is a show by the people (the awards are fan-voted) for the people (screaming fans make up much of the audience) and filled with a few human errors.

A funny Jane Lynch hosted the annual event-- one of the first big ceremonies of awards season-- Wed. night at Los Angeles' Microsoft Theater. Here are five highlights from the show:

Jane Lynch sang, danced and poked fun of Steve Harvey

In a live opening number, Lynch showed off her Glee pipes (and quipped that she never sang that much on the musical show) in a song-and-dance parody of Shut Up and Dance that went "stand up and choose." She joked about how she's like the multi-talented Neil Patrick Harris, only "more masculine." And the jokes kept on coming. Later, she presented "new" Most Deserving of People's Choice Award to Thomas Lennon, before realizing that, wait, he was the first runner-up. The winner was... Miss Columbia! Ariadna Gutierrez, in a sash and crown, came up to claim her prize. "It's my fault, I didn't bother to come to dress rehearsal and I just read the card wrong," said Lynch. "I'm so sorry."

A dude crashed the stage and the wrong winner was shown

Two unknown men somehow made it onto the People's Choice telecast. Man No. 1 showed up when the women of The Talk accepted the daytime hosts awards. He bypassed security to get to say something on the mic, but Sheryl Underwood quickly shooed the stage-crasher away and Sharon Osbourne kicked him so Sarah Gilbert could finish her speech. Man No. 1 was on-camera the Favorite Social Media Star was announced. The winner was Buzzfeed's Matt Bellassai, who was sitting behind the excited guy that videographers accidentally featured.

Dakota Johnson recovered from a wardrobe malfunction

On her way to accept the Favorite Dramatic Movie Actress award, Johnson realized something bad: Presenter "Leslie (Mann) just broke my dress" with her congratulatory hug. But, after holding up her top, the Fifty Shades of Grey star made light of the whole situation (and didn't flash anyone): "Well, it's not like nobody here hasn't already seen my b---s."

Sandra Bullock and Vin Diesel gave emotional speeches

Bullock, who took home the trophy for Favorite Movie Actress, took time in her speech to talk about her son (he would thank "the world" and "the planet" if given an award) and about her admiration for fellow nominees. She told the crowd that she loves her job for a few reasons: "It’s the people I meet, and the memories I make, and once again, you, the people, have allowed me to be in great company tonight with these women I share this category with. ... They all break molds, push that glass ceiling up, and they’re all mamas. We’re all working mamas who love what we do.”

Diesel, who took home two trophies for Furious 7, got teary-eyed remembering his late co-star Paul Walker. When I hear that you voted for this film, "I think of Dom and Brian and I start to think of Paul," said Diesel. "My only message to you is you’d be amazed what you can do with love. You’d be amazed at how powerful a force that is. When we didn’t want to come back to filming when the tragedy was too heavy, it was the love of everyone combined that saw us through to the end."

Surprise: Johnny Depp showed up. Not a surprise: Ellen DeGeneres won more awards.

Though Depp wasn't seated in the audience for the People's Choice Awards, the actor showed up when his name was called as the winner for Favorite Movie Actor. It turns out the Black Mass star was hiding backstage. He accepted the trophy with jokes about his movie: "You know, the only thing that upset me was that my dance sequences were cut out completely," he said to an audience that encouraged him to show off his moves live. He did not.

DeGeneres, a People's Choice regular, accepted both the Favorite Daytime TV Host and Humanitarian Award. While onstage, she made laugh-out-loud comments like "Would I call myself the Mother Theresa of talk shows, the Dali Lama of daytime? No. But I'm sure someone out there has." She also showed a shirtless picture of fellow People's Choice winner Chris Hemsworth to make the audience happy.
