‘13 Reasons Why’ Showrunner Brian Yorkey Inks Overall Deal With Paramount TV

Brian Yorkey, showrunner and executive producer of Netflix’s hit series “13 Reasons Why,” has inked an overall television deal with Paramount TelevisionVariety has learned.

The news comes just one day after “13 Reasons Why,” which is produced by Paramount TV, was renewed for a second season.

Under the two-year deal, Paramount TV has exclusive rights to develop, produce, and distribute all television projects from Yorkey across broadcast, cable, and digital services.

A playwright, before “13 Reasons Why,” Yorkey received the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for drama, as well as the 2009 Tony Award for best score, for his Broadway musical “Next to Normal.” His other theater credits include “Making Tracks,” “The Wedding Banquet,” and “Book of Jobs.”

“From ‘Next to Normal’ to ’13 Reasons Why,’ Brian has the innate ability to create both heart-warming and heart-breaking moments that fully immerse the audience and leave an indelible impact,” said Amy Powell, president of Paramount Television and Digital. “Paramount TV seeks out visionaries like Brian to partner on compelling and original content, and we are excited to see his next project.”

Yorkey is the latest member of Paramount TV’s family, joining the likes of Selena Gomez and Tom McCarthy of “13 Reasons Why,” Carlton Cuse of “Jack Ryan,” Cary Fukunaga of “The Alienist,” and Jonah Hill and Emma Stone who will star in Netflix’s “Maniac,” also from Fukunaga.

Yorkey is repped by WME, Anonymous Content, and Kim Stenton.
