‘Hamilton’s $998 Top Yields $3M Week, $300 Average Ticket Price At Holiday Broadway B.O.

With its seasonal top price of $998, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s historico-musico rap blockbuster Hamilton registered $3.26 million in ticket sales last week, the first of the expected Thanksgiving-to-New Year’s Times Square gold rush. Disney’s pair — The Lion King and Aladdin — both broke the $2 million barrier, at $2.5 million and $2.04 million, respectively. Also in the $2M club was Wicked, its cash register ringing up $2.3 million in sales. Only Hamilton, among those shows, kissed the $1K-per-ticket ring to achieve those numbers, however. The hike resulted in a Street-leading average ticket price of $303.21.

Week 27 of the 2016-2017 Broadway season was a whopper, posting a 32% increase over Week 26, to $35.3 million. That’s a record, beating last year’s $33.85 million by $1.4 million or 4 per cent. All but a handful of 34 shows on the roster showed improvements over the previous stand.

All three of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s shows made the Lord and the landlords happy with $1 million-plus weeks: Cats, at the Nederlander Organization’s Neil Simon, sold $1.2 million in tickets, 84% of its gross potential, with an average ticket price of $118.82. School Of Rock: The Musical, at the Shubert Organization’s Winter Garden, did $1.6 million, 93% of potential; average ticket price, $125.86 price. The Phantom Of The Opera, at the Shuberts’ Majestic, registered $1.26 million, 84% of potential, with an average ticket price of $106.48.

The $1 million-plus club included Fiddler On The Roof, $1.06 million at the Shuberts’ Broadway; Matilda, $1.26 million at the Shubert; Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet Of 1812, $1.3 million at the Shuberts’ Imperial; Cirque Du Soleil’s Paramour, $1.08 million at Ambassador Theatre Group’s Lyric; The Book Of Mormon, $1.5 million at Jujamcyn Theatres’ Eugene O’Neill; and The Front Page, $1.3 million at the Shuberts’ Broadhurst.

On the negative side of the ledger, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, at the Roundabout Theatre Company’s Stephen Sondheim, fell $38K to $881.6K; Heisenberg, at Manhattan Theatre Club’s Friedman, was down $113.7K because of a six-performance week; the Liev Schreiber-Janet McTeer led revival of Les Liaisons Dangereuses was off a bruising $251K at the Shuberts’ Booth; On Your Feet! was down $56K at the Nederlanders’ Marquis; and The Cherry Orchard dropped $24.8K to $284K at the Roundabout’s American Airlines.
