Kong: Skull Island, which is being distributed by Legendary Entertainment in China, debuted today to a big $22.5M (which includes Thursday night and midnight screenings) to claim the second-biggest English-language bow. Resident Evil: The Final Chapter had a massive $33M take in its first day in the Middle Kingdom last month, also with previews.

Kong: Skull Island,  which also ended up with the fifth-biggest Friday opening ever for a U.S. title, has grossed $167.3M so far. It grabbed an $85.1M opening when it hit the international market on March 13 in 65 markets — marking the fourth-biggest March bow and the second-highest before it opening in the Middle Kingdom. On Imax, it also enjoyed the second-biggest global opening (without China figured into the equation).

The top offshore market on Skull Island currently is the U.K. with $14.8M followed by Mexico with $11.8M and Korea with $11.6M. The ape will stomp into Japan tomorrow.
