BET has set February air dates for Madiba, its six-hour miniseries that chronicles the life of Nelson Mandela. The three-part saga, starring Laurence Fishburne (black-ish) as Mandela, will air February 1,8 and 15, 2017, as part of BET’s Black History Month programming. The network also has released a first-look clip of the miniseries (click above to watch).

Madiba is based on two Mandela books, Conversations With Myself and Nelson Mandela by Himself. Named after Madiba, the Thembu clan to which Nelson Mandela belonged, the project tells the story of a younger Nelson Mandela during the early-60s as he deals with the political unrest engulfing South Africa. Shot exclusively in South Africa and on Robben Island, Madiba details the early years of Mandela’s personal journey, and reveals the behind-the-scenes strategizing and bold organizing tactics he and his collaborators used to bring attention to their movement both domestically and internationally.

Madiba is produced and financed by Blue Ice Pictures and Out of Africa Entertainment Production in association with Cinema Gypsy Productions and executive produced by Blue Ice Pictures’ president, Lance Samuels. Kevin Hooks (Prison Break, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D) directs. Madiba is written by Paul Webb (Selma), Jane Maggs (The Offering, To the Teeth) Janine Eser, Avie Luthra (Lucky) and Kathleen McGhee-Anderson (The Fosters, Lincoln Heights, Touched by an Angel).
