The American Film Institute has revealed its list of the top 10 American films and top 10 American TV programs of the year.

The official selections for the upcoming AFI Awards, scheduled for a “noncompetitive atmosphere” on Jan. 6, 2017, reflect “culturally and artistically significant” art in the moving image realm. The AFI Awards marks the only national honor for the entertainment community’s creative teams as a whole, recognizing the collaborative nature of the art form.

Films on the list include the critically acclaimed “Moonlight,” Martin Scorsese’s deeply personal “Silence,” Clint Eastwood’s account of the Miracle on the Hudson — “Sully” — and Disney’s animated “Zootopia.”

On the television side, selections include standbys like “Game of Thrones” and “Veep,” as well as new entries like “Atlanta,” “The Crown,” “The Night Of,” and “Stranger Things.” NBC’s “This Is Us” was the only program from a broadcast network to make the list.

Additionally, Ezra Edelman’s 5-part documentary “O.J.: Made in America” was earmarked for a special prize. It is considered the frontrunner for the documentary feature Oscar this year.

Selections are made based on “works that advance the art of the moving image, enhance the rich cultural heritage of America’s art form, inspire audiences and artists alike, and make a mark on American society,” according to AFI.
