Focus Features has dropped the first trailer for Victoria & Abdul, the Working Title-produced film directed by Stephen Frears and starring Judi Dench. Based on the Shrabani Basu’s book Victoria & Abdul: The True Story of the Queen’s Closest Confidant, story sees Dench return to the throne as Queen Victoria (she was previously nominated for an Oscar for her portrayal of the long-standing monarch in Mrs. Brown and won a statue for Shakespeare in Love, in which she played Queen Elizabeth I).

This time, we’ll see her play an older Queen Victoria, where she strikes up an unexpected friendship with Abdul Karim (Ali Fazal), a young clerk who has travelled from India to participate in the Queen’s Golden Jubilee. He quickly gains favor with the strong and opinionated monarch and the two develop an alliance with a loyalty to one another that her household and inner circle all attempt to destroy.

As the friendship deepens, the Queen begins to see a changing world through new eyes and joyfully reclaims her humanity.

Billy Elliot scribe Lee Hall adapts the script. Adeel Akhtar, Simon Callow, Michael Gambon, Eddie Izzard, Ruth McCabe, Tim Pigott-Smith, Julian Wadham, Olivia Williams and Fenella Woolgar also star. Working Title produces in association with BBC Films. Focus co-finances and distributes the pic, which is set to bow in the U.S. on September 29.
