Attack of the Earworms!

Slide 1 of 26

Hits that drive you crazyBy Michael Shilling Special to MSN MusicAmong this year's newly adopted entries in Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary is a not-so-rare critter: the earworm. Sonic rather than corporeal, the insidious earworm doesn't tunnel into the earth; it penetrates your memory, and it does so with often maddening effect. It can be triggered by even a fragment of melody or a snippet of a lyric. This summer's monster hit "Call Me Maybe" is only the most recent example of this haunting aural tic, as witnessed by this onslaught of selected earworms past and present.
