The 80-year-old real estate mogul has secretly been dealing with the disease for an extended period of time.

It has been an all-time terrible week for Sterling, who was banned for life by the NBA for racist comments he made on a tape secretly recorded by his former girlfriend, V. Stiviano. Sterling enraged the league and leaders across the country — all the way to President Obama — for his insistence that Stiviano not bring black people to his games or post photos with them on Instagram.

Sterling's diagnosis was unknown to his players, who had protested against him on Sunday by taking off their Clippers jackets and wearing black wristbands during their game against the Clippers.

"If that is true, my thoughts and prayers are with him," Blake Griffin, the team's star forward, said. "Nobody deserves to go through something like that."

The NBA's owners will vote soon to decide whether to force Sterling to sell the team, following his lifetime ban by new commissioner Adam Silver.
