NEW YORK (AP) — Harken back to a time when Shake Shack wasn't a burger-flipping force with 130 locations worldwide. Then, in 2001, it was a hot dog cart in New York City's Madison Square Park. A new book about the company says the cart operated for three summers, losing money each year. But its creator, restaurateur Danny Meyer, knew he was onto something. The book, called "Shake Shack," is co-written by Shake Shack CEO Randy Garutti and culinary director Mark Rosati, who was once just another guy in line.

The book is a fun read. It offers not only tidbits about the brand's origin story and other Shake Shack kitsch, but also, of course, recipes. It's published this month by Clarkson Potter.
