Carol Burnett snubbed TV boss' order to fire Vicki Lawrence

6/17/2014

Iconic comedienne Carol Burnett championed her The Carol Burnett Show co-star Vicki Lawrence after a top TV boss tried to cut her from the series. When the classic U.S. TV programme debuted in 1967, Lawrence was just 18 years old and fresh out of high school. However, her inexperience irked an executive at America's CBS network, and Burnett was urged to fire her just weeks into the first season. Appearing alongside Lawrence on Queen Latifah's talk show on Tuesday (20May14), the funnywoman recalled, "One of the vice presidents at CBS, after we had been on the air maybe three or four weeks, called and he kind of hinted that maybe we should let you (Lawrence) go. "He said, 'Are you sure you want that young girl on the show? Because she's really very rough.' And I said, 'So are diamonds at first.' "I knew from the get go that Vicki had it." Burnett and Lawrence were also joined by former co-stars Tim Conway and Lyle Waggoner, as well as costume designer Bob Mackie, on the special reunion episode.
