It's long been known that Channing Tatum has had an interest in Marvel's card-slinging mutant, Gambit. The "22 Jump Street" star first started talking about it last year.

Now, Tatum is talking about plans for the character, and a possible solo film, that all-but-confirm he'll be taking on the role. And yet, still nothing is official. "I've been pretty vocal about wanting to be the part of Gambit for a very long time. It's a weird, pinching-myself moment that we're even having the conversation," Tatum said in an interview with MTV.

"X-Men" producer Lauren Shuler Donner has publicly confirmed that she is on board to have him take over the role as well. Taylor Kitsch played Gambit in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine."

While the rumor mill has Tatum's Gambit a part of the next X-film, "X-Men: Apocalypse," Tatum is eyeing a solo project. "We've talked about it being a standalone, first, and actually trying to change the 'hero, superhero movie,'" he said. "Gambit is not your typical hero. He's a thief."

However, he still had to concede that nothing is official with Marvel just yet. "Creatively, we're starting to chug forward," he said. "There are only conversations and dreams right now, really."
