Japanese animation “Your Name” instantly achieved hit status in China with a powerful $41 million opening weekend.

The film, which is now the third highest of all time in Japan, opened with $11 million on Friday in China and climbed to $17.4 million on Saturday, according to data from Ent Group.

The Japanese title pushed aside “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” which slipped to $15.5 million in its second weekend, after $39.7 million in its first three days. After 10 days on release “Beasts” has amassed $72.6 million. The score on IMAX screens was 3.3 million, lifting the film’s IMAX cumulative to $10.1 million.

“Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children” was the second ranked new release, placing third with $10.2 million in three days. Chinese media reports that the film was edited for release in China as regulators decided some scenes were too intense for children.

Chinese martial arts action film “Swordmaster” placed fourth with $7.51 million.

“Moana” followed a similar pattern to its opening weekend, with a quiet Friday followed by a wider screen count on Saturday and Sunday and a jump up the charts. In its second weekend “Moana” earned $5.78 million for a 10-day cumulative of $21.8 million.

Chinese comedy actioner “Super Express” opened with $4.17 million in its opening weekend.

Chinese drama “I Am Not Madame Bovary” added $1.96 million in its third week of release, to take its 17-day score to $55.2 million.

British-German crime action thriller “Autobahn” drove off with just $1.55 million in its opening lap, finishing eighth.

“Allied” took $1.15 million over the weekend. But, having opened two days earlier, it clocked up a #3.59 million opening five days.

Chinese drama “Sentence Me Guilty” rounded out the top ten with a $500,000 opening.
