LOS ANGELES (AP) — Director Christopher Nolan and actor Mark Rylance didn't know quite how famous Harry Styles was, but the young people in their lives certainly did.

Nolan said Friday that he cast Styles in his World War II epic "Dunkirk" because Styles "fit the part wonderfully and truly earned a seat at the table."

The 23-year-old Styles gained fame with One Direction and recently launched his solo career. He plays a British soldier in Nolan's suspense-thriller about the evacuation of hundreds of thousands of Allied soldiers from Dunkirk, France, in 1940.

Rylance says his 11-year-old niece was giddy that he got to work with Styles. He says she was more excited about that than about anything else he's done in his award-winning career.

The film opens in North American theaters July 21.
