'Couples Retreat' Stills

Slide 1 of 17

By Glenn Whipp Special to MSN MoviesMarital mishaps rule the day in "Couples Retreat," a comedy that tracks four harried marrieds to an island resort where relationships are both wrecked and renewed. Imagine "Fantasy Island" with Ricardo Montalban walking around in a Speedo and dispensing wisdom a la Dr. Phil and you have the idea (though we wouldn't blame you if you burned that image out of your mind by the time you finish this sentence). The comedy, the latest writing and acting collaboration between Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau, offers an Old Testament-style plague of relationship woes but also operates under the fundamental assumption that every couple is worth saving, a notion that Zsa Zsa Gabor might dispute. For the sake of argument, let's give the guys from "Swingers" a pass on this one. Who are we to deny the immutability of everlasting love? Then again, Hollywood has given us some pretty improbable happy endings over the years, which leads us to wonder: What movie couples would end up in couples therapy a year or two after the closing credits roll?
