The American Society of Cinematographers will award Denzel Washington the group’s annual Board of Governors Award during the 31st annual ASC Awards on February 4. The organization gives the award to individuals “whose body of work has made significant and indelible contributions to cinema” and is the only ASC Award not given to a cinematographer, but to those who have been champions for directors of photography and the visual art form.

Washington directed, produced and stars in Paramount’s Fences, reprising his Tony-winning acting role along with his Tony-winning co-star Viola Davis. The pic is in the heat of awards season and bows in theaters on Christmas Day.

“Denzel Washington is an amazing director and actor, and a conscious force in these challenging times,” ASC president Kees van Oostrum said today. “A true artist is empowered by the era they live in, and he expresses an awareness of the world around us through his work. It is that strength of character that we honor with the ASC Governors Award.”
