E! has acquired the People’s Choice Awards, the cable channel announced Thursday.

Beginning in 2018, the awards show will be broadcast on E! and produced by NBCUniversal’s Wilshire Studios, which produces E!’s red carpet coverage.

“Rooted in pop culture and celebrity, the ‘People’s Choice Awards’ is a natural extension for E! and we are excited to evolve and supercharge this fan-centered event for the next generation in a way that only E! can,” said Adam Stotsky, president of E! “Over two decades ago, E! created the red carpet experience and became the leading destination for fans on Hollywood’s biggest nights.  With this acquisition, we are harnessing our entertainment authority, live event expertise and huge multi-platform reach to take fans beyond the red carpet and offer a true end to end consumer experience.”

The Peoples Choice Awards show was created by Robert Stivers in 1975 and was previously owned by Procter & Gamble and produced by Mark Burnett. The show originally used polling by gallup to determine award winners in television, film, and music categories based on popular opinion. In 2005, it switched to an online system that allowed fans and viewers to vote directly for their favorites.

CBS had the broadcast home of the People’s Choice Awards since its birth. The most recent show, hosted in January by Joel McHale, drew 6.6 million viewers and an all-time low 1.2 rating in the 18-49 demo, according to Nielsen live-plus-same day numbers.

The New York Times first reported the acquisition.
