Fall Geek Movies Preview

Slide 1 of 12

'The Avengers' and 'The Dark Knight Rises' made this summer, but what we can expect in theaters as 2012 comes to a close?By Don KayeSpecial to MSN MoviesThe summer movie season is over, and it proved to be a strange one indeed. Some films did better than expected ("Snow White and the Huntsman"), others were colossal sinking ships ("Battleship") and some disappeared before even getting into cineplexes ("G.I. Joe: Retaliation," anyone?). But if this summer will be remembered for anything, it will be the two gigantic hits that started and finished it: "The Avengers" (nearly $1.5 billion worldwide at the box office) and "The Dark Knight Rises" (closing in on $900 million worldwide at press time). Both were eagerly anticipated by fans and mainstream audiences alike, and both delivered the goods. So the question is: Does 2012 have anything else left in store for us?Bing: More about 'The Hobbit' | More about 'Twilight: Breaking Dawn, Part 2'Well, let's see: We do have the requisite "Resident Evil" entry (a September ritual at this point), and we will be celebrating five decades of "Bond, James Bond," as his 23rd adventure, "Skyfall," blasts onto the screen in November. There's also the end of one saga to contend with ("Twilight") and the launching of an epic new one that's also a prequel ("The Hobbit"). And in between all that, there are original offerings in sci-fi ("Looper"), horror ("Sinister") and the unclassifiable ("Cloud Atlas"). In other words, expect fall at the movies to be as lively, bewildering and hopefully enjoyable as the season that just ended. Let's take a look.Related: Who's who in 'Catching Fire'For more movie news, follow MSN Movies on Facebook and Twitter. (Warner Bros./Summit Entertainment/Tri-Star Pictures)
