Final Screen Bows

Slide 1 of 18

Rudolph Valentino, "The Son of the Sheik" (1926)The Latin Lover died of blood poisoning and a perforated ulcer just two weeks before reprising his most famous role. He was 31 years old. The untimely demise caused hysteria among his female fan base, who worshipped the sexy silent film star. Typecast as an Arab his entire career, Valentino took many breaks from acting and detested the image he created. Deeply in debt by the mid-1920s, he needed a sure thing to make some money. This desperate move turned out to be his last. He was sick for much of the shoot, and barely completed his work. (Everett Collection)
