GI Joe creator dead at 86

6/17/2014

Donald Levine, the man credited with developing the world's first action figure, has died, aged 86. A former Hasbro executive, Levine created the GI Joe figure, which became a must-have for kids in the mid-to-late 1960s. He came up with the idea while serving in the U.S. Army in Korea as a way to honour veterans. The action figure inspired comic books and films, and GI Joe Collector's Club stages an annual convention in Dallas, Texas. GI Joe was elected into the Toy Hall of Fame in 2004.
