Thousands of networks have broadcast exponentially more series, and nearly all owe a debt of gratitude to some influential forbearer. After all, as with music, film or any other art, there are only so many variations on established themes and formulas. The unknown variable is whether a new offering improves on, or at least differentiates from, its predecessors. Take "Mistresses" (premiering June 3 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on ABC), for example.
